Chamber music is an adventure—its success depends on many variables. When Duo MARES came together in 2004 to prepare for their very first concert, their program featured a colorful and varied mix ranging from Bach to Piazzolla. While this covered several centuries of music history, it consisted exclusively of arrangements.

Since there was only a very limited amount of original music for the combination of accordion and viola, and because Duo MARES had no intention of harvesting solely from “other people’s gardens,” the two musicians set out to create their own repertoire for this sonically rich and distinctive pairing.

Through collaborations with internationally renowned composers, a growing body of works has been created—each tailor-made for this unique instrumental combination.

These compositions open up a wide range of sound worlds: from Ivo Petrić’s sweeping romantic gestures and opulent textures, to Bruno Strobl’s stark avant-garde waves and fractures; from Nico Huijbregts’s Falsche Tango, full of nervous, disjointed energy, to Sinta Wullur’s Indian-exotic Moods and Modes; from Gerard Beljon’s Bye..., with its dark, melancholic introspection, to Chiel Meijering’s rhythmically exuberant and airy Amber and Cream.

This recording invites listeners on a rich and varied journey through the fascinating landscapes of contemporary music.
