La Volta draws its inspiration from the music of the Elizabethan era, primarily from Thomas Morley’s First Book of Consort Lessons (1599), a key work in the tradition of the broken consort.
A series of vibrant arrangements of pavanes, galliards, and other dances by John Dowland, Thomas Morley, and William Byrd is contrasted with four contemporary original compositions. The composers Klaas de Vries, Roderik de Man, David Dramm, and Oene van Geel took their inspiration from Morley’s seminal collection.
