The ensemble Black Pencil was founded in 2010 and made its debut that same year in the Chamber Music Hall of the renowned Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. The ensemble draws inspiration, among other sources, from various folk music traditions. New compositions written specifically for Black Pencil are set in contrast to bold, action-packed arrangements of folk music.

The program Buffoni! is inspired by the Commedia dell’arte and its performers, the buffoni. The characters in the original works by Roderik de Man, Nico Huijbregts, Chiel Meijering, Enric Monfort, and Guus Janssen are modeled after figures from the Commedia—from the ridiculous Scaramuccia to the clever Colombina and the bumbling Zanni.

These new works are interwoven with short interludes, improvisations, and adventurous arrangements of historical masterpieces also influenced by the Commedia dell’arte—works by Georg Philipp Telemann, Giovanni Giacomo Gastoldi, Domenico Gallo, Unico Wilhelm van Wassenaer, and Giovanni Battista Pergolesi.
