Chamber music is always a adventure whose success is dependent on a whole series of variables. When Duo MARES joined up in 2004 for the very first concert, they decided on an extremely varied programme ranging from Bach to Piazzolla, that embraced a couple of centuries in musical history but which was made up exclusively of arrangements.
There are just few pieces scored for the combination of viola and accordion. It was clear to Duo MARES that their combination was simply too interesting and the sonorities too delightful to continue only to till “foreign soils” – they wanted to create an own repertory.
They contacted a number of internationally acclaimed composers and so over the years Duo MARES could add newly composed music to their concerts – a selection of these pieces is presented on this album.
The soundscapes derived by the two instruments are very diverse – Ivo Petric’s Duo concertante with its grand Romantic sweep and opulent sonorities, Bruno Strobl’s sinuous and austerely avant-garde Broken Waves, Nico Huijbregts’ nervous and distracted Falsche Tango, the Indian exoticism of Sinta Wullur’s Moods and Modes, the melancholical darkness and anguished thoughtfulness of Gerard Beljon’s Bye… and Chiel Meijering’s rhythmically boisterous and light-hearted Amber and Cream – all pieces invite the listener to join the performers on an interesting and varied journey through the fascinating world of contemporary music.
